Hygge - A little bit of TLC

Louise was lucky enough to be invited to chat to Rick Jackson on BBC Solent radio this week as part of their ‘Hygge Week’. As well as talking about our little shop in Warwick Lane Shopping Centre in Wickham, Louise explained how we can all make our homes a bit more hyggelig.

HYGGE IS A BETTER WAY OF LIFE

TURN OFF THE BIG CEILING LIGHT AND GET HAPPY

MAKE YOUR OWN HYGGEKROG

From textiles to time out, lamps to laughter, candles to cwtch.

As well as chatting about spending quality time with friends and family – taking time out together to eat a meal and talk without distractions – and getting away from the stresses of the world – mindfulness and really being yourself – Louise sums up how you can make your own home more hyggelig.

All you need is a little bit of TLC.

T is for Textiles – Layering up those textiles – throws, blankets, cushions and rugs – in different materials, colourways and textures will help you to create a hyggekrog (a cosy nook) where you can curl up with a good book or a cup of tea (or hot chocolate). Warm earthy tones and natural materials like wool, cotton and sheepskin, are temperature regulating and are best to help create a cosy, warm feeling.

L is for Lighting – Turn off the big, bright, white ceiling light and opt for floor lamps and table lamps instead. Edison style lightbulbs will also help create a calm, welcoming atmosphere. Use task lamps for any work areas. People that visit out shop often comment on the lighting and the warm and relaxing atmosphere it creates.

C is for Candles – Why should we only light candles at Christmas or on special occasions? Make candles part of your daily routine. One good quality scented candle in a fragrance that relaxes or invigorates you can instantly transform your mood. Use multiple (unscented) candles of different shapes and sizes to create a cosy, warm hyggelig feeling every day of the week. Strings of fairy lights can also work well and are not just for Christmas.

So all you need in order to create a hygge home is to remember to add a little bit of TLC.
